December 12, 2000 - Tuesday
I left home this morning for the airport at about 6:00am on a 3-day business trip. Getting up more than a half an hour earlier than usual, I wouldn't have expected to see Harry today at all. Regrettably, that was not the case. For the second day in a row, he decided he was hungry a little before 4:00am and let us know. Both nights we waited for a few minutes in vain for it to pass, hoping he would put himself back to sleep, but both days his mother eventually nursed him rather than letting him suffer unknowningly.

I've thought it before: feeding him at that time seems like a tenuous action given the troublesome possibility that he might get used to it. In this case, I can only hope that his waking up in the middle of the night hungry is a residual of his recent cold and not an emerging ritual. His appetite has been a weak during the illness and maybe it's just his body getting back to a more normal intake. For better and worse, I will not be home to find out over the next two nights whether that's it or not.
