June 10, 2000 - Saturday
Harry visited his grandfather's cabin in the woods for the first time and seemed to take quite happily to the rustic flair. It's all new and different, including the glowing and crackling fireplace, so what's not to like for a 6-month old? The bigger story for the day, since we didn't get there until dinner time, were the apparently contented hours Harry spent in the car.

We started out at about 9:40am and didn't arrive there until almost 7:00pm. The trip to the cabin doesn't usually take near that long, but we stopped at a number of places along the way, including a visit to Harry's Aunt Jane's house where he will be spending tomorrow night without us (a pending first). The other stops held little interest for Harry, other than a constant stream of new sights, sounds, and smells. Yet, of the nine hours or so from leaving home to arriving there, about half of that was actually in the car driving, with the longest single stretch at something just over two hours. Nonetheless, Harry was a champ. Sure, his mother spent her share of time in the back seat, but Harry offered only the mildest complaints about his predicament in the back seat and slept more than half of the time we were on the road. We met a couple with an infant about Harry's age whose girl hates the car, crying immediately upon entering one and for as long as she was in one. That would be trying to say the least and, thankfully, Harry has so far taken a different outlook to automobiles.

Since it can get chilly during the night at a place in the woods with no heat, we kept Harry in bed with us for the entire night. We've done that before at home, but never with Harry in the middle since he's not likely to roll out of the waterbed at home. That seemed more possible in the bed in the cabin, so we played the family bed for a night. Fortunately, neither his mother nor I rolled onto Harry's tiny frame in the night.
