December 14, 2004 - Tuesday
The boys had their respective 3 and 5 year checkups today. Harry is 40.5" tall and weighs 37 lbs., meaning he's still right about at the 25 percentile for weight and just slightly above it in height. Jeremy is 37.5" and 34.5 lbs, putting him right at about 50% for height and 75% for weight. He's just such a solid boy (his mother always like to say how wonderful he is to hug). Harry had his first eye test, looking at a chart and calling out objects. He thought it was funny. The nurse asked if he could stand on one leg. He could, but showed he could also hop. Harry also had his blood pressure checked, something I've always thought was fun at the doctors. He liked it, too. Harry's most wonderful performance, though, was when it came time for three booster shots. We hadn't expected those until next year for some reason, so I hadn't warned Harry. When he learned about it, he got slightly quieter, but not much. Then as the nurses where giving him the first and second ones, he just watched and said a surprisingly happy sounding "ouch." He was a true champ. After the shots and certainly after we got in the car, he fell into a (very typical) introspective mood. I asked a couple of times whether he was OK. He finally answered and said just, "I'm not sad." Then he asked, "why do they give me shots," and we talked about preventing disease. He was introspective. But, he was also proud to tell his mother how brave he had been.

Jeremy did not have so many tests, but he apparently did charm the nurse with his semi-faux shyness. On the way out she whispered, "he's so cute, and his personality...!"
