October 19, 2006 - Thursday
Jeremy has just starting to work on rhythm and last night I think he may have had something of a breakthrough while he was practicing. I now that's easy to say, and there's really no way to know right now, bt he did more than play a couple of pieces very well rhythmically. It's particularly hard to play rhythmically when one's fingers just don't move very fast, but I could see that he was getting it mentally and at least trying to kept up with the beat).

( I was actually so surprised and excited at how well he did on the May Song that when he was done I waved my clinched fists in the air. Jeremy kind of giggled and said, "for a minute I thought you were mad." He was clearly quite proud.)

Last night he got up at 2:00am, 3:30, 4:30, and 6:00. Of course, that's no indication of anything either, although I did confirm that he hadn't slept at school at rest time and waking up like that at night is often associated with heightened mental activity. But then today the object of his artwork took a dramatic turn to creating these notes, these compositions. He now says he's going to be a composer. Of course, he doesn't quite seem to understand that the notes need to go in very specific places on the staff, or that the fingerings are assocaited with specific notes on the staff, but he's clearly got it on the brain. Unfortunately, we did not get to practice his cello during Harry's drum lesson, something we've regularly done for a year now. It's been harder this semester because the rooms have been full and the stage always seems to be in use and we've usually only gotten a few minutes in, but until today always a little bit.

We did take the boys to the open rehearsal for the symphony concert their mother and I will go to this Saturday, but unfortunately Jeremy was too tried after a night of so little sleep to make it past one piece, Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain," even though he did take a rare nap at school. Harry was disappointed we had to leave so early. So was I. I think Jeremy would have liked it.
