Call us very premature, but this morning we bought Harry
a starter potty. It's been quite a few weeks since Harry started saying "poop,"
often right after he had. So, we figured it would be good to be ready even
though the general rule of thumb suggests it will be another year before he
does anything with it. And, we might have been happy to leave it in the box
for a while, but this afternoon while his mother was out, I went into the
bathroom to pee and left the door open. Harry was in the kitchen playing so
I figured it would be OK. He could come if he wanted and, sure enough, he
came in to see what was going on. He's seen both his mother and I using the
facilities of home before and it does seem right that he slowly learn what
that equipment is for.
But this time, he took a particularly keen interest, standing to my side,
but leaning forward to get a good look. And, he seemed to be concentrating
a great deal. When I was finished, he was not and started talking about the
pee. Well, it seemed with that I had no choice but to get out his potty while
he was thinking about it. He loved it. It's hard to say for sure, but he seemed
to make the connection right away, talking about peeing and going back and
forth between the toilet and his potty, lifting the lids and looking inside.
Admittedly, it may still be a while before we actually let him try it out,
but I'd think there's a value in letting him get comfortable with the object.
There's more to come on this one to be sure.
