August 17, 2005 - Wednesday
Jeremy was dragging tonight at dinner and that gave Harry and me a chance to play the Madagascar DVD game. After another technical glitch aborted our first game (I was ahead by a point at the time), we got all the way through a second one and Harry won. Sure, I might have coaxed him a bit on a couple of harder questions and clicked in a little earlier than he gave his answer on some of the word questions, but for the most part it was a legitimate win. Somewhat surprisingly, although not really at all, he seemed to know exactly what the score was all the time. He was ahead by a couple earlier on, but I came back to tie and was giving him a little of the business about winning if he slowed down (I was pretty set on making sure Harry won this game and would have played it cool if necessary, but it really wasn't, he does very well), but he took it in stride. When he got to the end and got his last question right he turned with a hesitant, yet excited look and asked "did I get it right?" just to make sure. I said he had and he slowly started to get more excited in a nervous kind of way, trying to hold it in, maybe waiting to find out what would happen if he beat daddy at the game. Mostly he was just excited and it all came out when the DVD did it's big winner announcement and he knew it was official. It was a pretty special moment and I talked to him later about it at bedtime. Interestingly, he gave me credit for winning the first game since I was ahead, just as I had said of him last time we had that technical glitch. Then I tried to emphasize the point that we had fun the whole game long and that we would have even if he had not won. But, of course, I conceded, it's still better to win. He agreed, "I beat you!" What a happy smile.
