Regrettably, Harry is now on his
third or fourth cold in the last three months since he started daycare. It's
not surprising at all, especially in the fall, that a collected group of kids
would pass illnesses between one another, but poor Harry has jelly flowing
from his nose. More pitifully, he now has a cough
that apparently hurts his chest or throat and, since he doesn't understand
it, it makes him cry a little. His mother spent the day at home with him.
I have to admit I'm conscious of the fact that there's one girl at the daycare
who always seems to bring the colds around. She's the younger sister of a
preschooler and, thus, regularly exposed to all kinds of illnesses. Unfortunately,
she passes them on to the other five kids, too. I know it's unfair to hold
it against the girl or her parents. Indeed, by the time the virus displays
symptoms it may already have spread to the others and would be too late to
keep her home and away from the others. On the other hand, Harry's mother
and I work in small and fairly isolated environments and are able to stay
away from most traveling bugs so the odds that a daycare outbreak will be
Harry's fault are minimal. I'm sure there'll be a time he will be the cause,
but most of the time he, and thus we, are the
unfortunate bystanders from another family's generosity of association.
