March 12, 2000 - Sunday
Maybe I've just not been spending as much time with Harry over the last few
weeks because of work, but it seems he's been more animated here in Mexico.
In addition to yesterday's near-meltdown, it seems as though he's protesting
more often about minor infractions to his general comfort. This isn't a major
change for Harry and he's still overall a very charming boy, but we are hearing
him more than before and seeing the big red, open-mouth face come out a little
more often for less serious discomforts.
More favorably, he's also been more vocal when he's happy, "gooing"
more than usual and frequently laughing, a talent baby books suggest would
normally be a month away. This morning he must have laughed for 10 minutes
straight. His mother started him going when I was across the hotel room working
on the computer. She eventually went to dress and I took over, but Harry was
happy with life at the Ritz and kept on giggling.
Earlier this weekend Harry also discovered the raspberry noise, buzzing his
lips together. That's also a talent that usually doesn't emerge until the
middle of the fifth month, so Harry is clearly a prodigy with the raspberry.
He also seems quite proud of it himself and for about five minutes this evening
while his mother and I primped and prepped for the evenings dinner,
Harry just lay on the bed by himself buzzing away to his little heart's delight.
This being our last full day in Cancun, we figured it was our last chance
for a while to expose Harry to water. Actually, we started that yesterday
when Harry's mother sat with him in a one-inch deep section of the pool, dangling
Harry's toes in the water. He seemed quite taken with it and we entertained
thoughts of submerging more of his body. Unfortunately, his diaper would surely
balloon and we weren't prepared with extra clothes. Today we were and took
Harry into the water. It's easy to read too much into his expressions and
hard to really know what he thought, but he was certainly well distracted
for about ten minutes. He even started to kick - a swimmer or just randomly
kicking? - but then slowly became board and eventually annoyed with the pool.
Although, it may just have been that his diaper, with all the absorbed water,
was getting too tight around his belly!
