May 9, 2000 - Tuesday
A couple evenings
ago, once Harry had fallen asleep of his now fairly regular schedule sometime
between 8:30-9:00pm, his mother and I laid on the couch together and watched
TV. We used to do this a couple times a week before Harry was born, lying
together at one end of the sofa in no strict arrangement other than a minimal
distance between our mouths and ears for the few words we'd pass. However,
it certainly felt like it had been a long time since we last just laid there
with the TV. It's not that we haven't watched any TV in that time, although
we watch less and try hard not to watch too much when Harry's alert, but in
hindsight we've usual been up and down more, less able to just relax, and
thus usually at opposite ends of the couch.
There are other simply things, of course - eating breakfast, reading the paper,
brushing teeth - that Harry's mother and I used to do together that we now
more often do separately to accommodate shifting schedules. In the grand scheme
of our lives, our marriage, and our family, those moments are not terribly
important, but they were part of the fabric of our lives together and it certainly
was nice to revisit a scene from our past.
We tried the sofa again tonight for our favorite show, but Harry was having
a little more than usual trouble falling asleep. So, we brought him over to
join us on the couch. He fell asleep right away with the warmth and comfort
of his mother and made for an adorable scene uncaptured on camera since we
were all there as one group. But, its a scene I wouldn't trade for anything
in the world, except maybe - once every now and then - for the other scene.
