Adults' heads are generally 1/6-1/7
their entire height. With toddlers, the head is nearly twice that proportion.
Here, that means the hood for Harry's sweatshirt goes clear down his back
as he toddles around from one room to another. And, he does easily move now
about the house. He can almost run, but I guess we still have a week or two
reprieve from that. However, he's at an age when people have started to ask
how childproof our house is. It's not terribly so, though so far Harry's been
very good about staying clear of the few objects we've trained him avoid (like
the wood stove, the plants, the CD rack, and the wire rack). We've tried to
be selective, so he does get a complex about touching anything, and so far
he seems to understand these limits. Somehow, it makes sense that he should
learn limits intellectually rather than physical because physical limitations
are simply speed bmups on the road to discovery. On the other hand, aside
from the stove, I don't think we've left any real serious looming dangers.
And, our house allows us to see from the kitchen through to half of the living
room.
For now, it's just amazing watching him maneuver around various objects, to
turn his body just enough to fit through tight areas and turn corners, or
to watch him swing his arms or swivel his upper body when he walks. He's already
fine-tuning his basic skills that we thought he just learned.
And, he's awfully cute doing it.
