I guess Harry told his drum teacher, Abe, that he'd been listening
to Holst's The Planets at some point and Abe, who I'm realizing
is a very well informed percussionist who knows rock, jazz,
show tunes, and classical, turned it into Harry's recital
piece. "Mission to Mars" is only about a minute
long, but it features the familiar 5/4 war march and a few
other little motifs from Holst's "Mars." It's a
nice piece for Harry because Harry likes The Planets so much
these days, also because it's a challenging piece that shows
how far Harry has come playing his drums. It occurs to me
as I listen to him practice it (perfectly) that he can play
it better than I could, even though I've been a musician for
about 35 years.
