April 5, 2000 - Wednesday
An interesting and very non-baby like thing happened to Harry this morning: he feel asleep for his usual morning naps - both of them - without getting cranky first, without eating anything first, and without any encouragement from me. On both occasions I had just put him down, in hopes of stealing a peak at email or something on the web, on a blanket-covered exercise mat that we have in the computer room. Both times he just closed his eyes and just fell asleep where he lay.

Of course, on the surface that doesn't sound all that remarkable: a baby is tired, it falls asleep. But, in reality, that's not been our experience. Usually there is some preamble of fatigue, some hint that he's moving in the sleep direction; yawns, tired eyes, some fit of squirming, some whining, or something that just says 'listen, I'm going to be needing some attention here soon so get ready.' Those experiences can very greatly in pronouncement, but I can remember a time when I didn't have a sense that Harry was - willingly or unwillingly - preparing himself for a refresher in some way or another. Even in the late evening when he goes to sleep quietly, he'll usually get droopy eyes long before he falls asleep. This morning he seemed wide awake one minute - he was, admittedly, very serene all morning - then asleep the next. Clearly, he was tired. But, he sure acted like a very mature boy.
