April 6, 2000 - Thursday
It was take your
son to work day again today and Harry spent the afternoon with the computers
and projectors in my lab. Actually, his presence here was specifically requested
for a meeting I was having. A company, whose marketing and PR representatives
are particularly friendly and jovial, had set an appointment to come by and
show me a new product. When they heard of Harry and saw his website, and heard
that I often had daddy-duty, they asked if he'd join us for the meeting. Naturally,
at first I thought their request was just good-natured, but idle conversation.
After all, a baby in a business meeting might very well - and at any time
- have a different agenda than the presenter and could be a serious distraction.
Nonetheless, when they asked a second time if Harry would be in attendance,
during a different phone call on a different day, I decided the invitation
was sincere. So, swapping baby watching times with his mother, I brought Harry
into the lab in the afternoon for the meeting.
For better or worse, though clearly better by most accounts, Harry was particularly
placid during most of the company's visit. He didn't show off any
new sounds or even too many smiles and was clearly getting moving toward
a nap. Fortunately, James - the presenter - was not offended when Harry feel
asleep in the middle of his explanation of technology. However, I'm betting
Susie - his gleeful company cohort - will not let him forget any time soon
that he put one of us to sleep.
