July 6, 2000 - Thursday
Last night Harry stayed awake well past his usual bedtime, likely due to sleeping
in the car on the commute home, and his mother finally just put him in his
crib to fall asleep on his own. It's a normal thing for parents to have to
do, I suppose, but we haven't done it before. Yet, Harry quieted right down
and didn't say a thing about it A parents' delight, I'm sure.
But, I had been on the
phone and missed it and curiosity got the best of me. I went into to check
on him. It's hard to know whether he was sleeping very restlessly or was still
awake, because he'd completely buried his head under a blanket. He was still
breathing without any foreseeable difficulty, but I thought maybe that wasn't
the best position for him, all things considered, and removed the blanket
as delicately as possible. And, I don't know if that startled him from sleep
or whether he was already awake and just playing possum, but he quickly turned
over with a big ready-to-go grin. That was not really what his mother was
hoping for and he stand up even later.
The interesting thing was that this morning I found him sleeping in the same
position with the blanket over his head. It was a chilly night by summer standards
and maybe he was rectifying the situation for himself, but he doesn't quite
have it down yet.
