May 2, 2000 - Tuesday
After a fairly successful week of Rice cereal, today it was time to add a food to Harry's dietary regimen. Some people, including Harry's doctor suggest that a yellow fruit is a good next step - mashed bananas, pears, maybe peaches - but another school of thought says orange vegetables like sweet potato or butternut squash won't introduce quite as much sugar into his diet and tastes right away. Harry's mother was leaning toward vegetable so this evening we tried a course of mashed sweet potatoes along with his dish of rice mush. Harry did pretty well with the Rice as usual, but wasn't so sure about the sweet potato the first time out.

Whether it's related to the sweet potato or not is anyone's guess, but as his mother and I were going to sleep around 11:00pm, Harry gained a remarkable second wind. Okay, it's not the first time a baby hasn't wanted to go to sleep when its parents did, and Harry did have his usual long nap in the evening, but this was different. Harry was lying in his crib in the dark, not grumbling with discontent and anxiety, but laughing. His was cooing, squealing, and doing the octave slur so loudly we thought the upstairs neighbors would wonder what was going on. Harry's mother brought him into our bed to settle him down a little - though concatenating that mood was not done lightly - and he eventually fell asleep, but not before a few more hoots and smiles in the dark.
