Thanksgivings was at our house
this year and, as usual for my family, that meant a large crowd for turkey
dinner. Harry's mother and I have played host before, but never in so accommodating
a house and never with a baby. As the people began to arrive en masse, Harry
at first seemed a little taken aback by the numbers, clinging to his mother's
side as she tried to ready the stuffing. On the other hand, rather than anxiety,
he may have just been ready for his lunch and appealing to his primary provider
of food. Harry finally joined us at the long table and sampled some of the
harvest fare, but didn't last through much of the adult meal before demanding
his release. He then happily spend the balance of the meal crawling behind
the long row of chairs.
Yet, it was after dessert that he really showed off for the crowd. For some
reason, I don't remember the full circumstances, I sat down on the floor with
Harry standing facing me. I guess I was hoping to show someone his new walking
ability and he more than answered the challenge. Right away he took 3-4 steps
straight to me, landing with arms wide around my neck. It worked so well I
tried it again. He did it again and I called his mother. She came, sat down,
and Harry didn't stop. He was ready to go and played the new game well into
the evening, almost always landing into a big happy hug from whomever was
waiting.
