I called home while waiting for a connecting flight this
evening. It was just about Harry's bedtime, so when he got on the phone, and
after our now typical Daddy, Harry, Harry, Daddy exchange, I sang just the
last phrase of the first verse of "Just the Way
You Look Tonight." Sure enough, Harry was right there to deliver
his "Tonight." His mother also says that earlier in the afternoon she had
put on Harry's new "Bananaphone" CD to an enthusiastic
response. There's a song on there that I've started to learn on the guitar
and I've played it a couple of times for Harry already. And, apparently, when
Raffi started to sing my song, Harry stopped and said, "tittar" (a pronunciation
improved from "tatar" for guitar) and "daddy."
Of course, I'm touched that he remembered my version of the song, but I'm
equally impressed that he now obvious remembers songs so well. And, while
we knew that already with "Just the Way You Look Tonight," I see this as an
even more impressive musical step. Here, he not only recognized a song he'd
heard before, but he recognized it in a completely different version as the
same song.
