This morning Harry picked up this little cup and pretended to drink from it - three times. Of course, he's played with objects before, so on the one hand this is not that big a deal. And, he's shown the ability to make associations, too. But, this is the first time that I can remember that he's made believe. He recognized this cup for what it was, knew that it might be used for drinking, but knew full well that there was nothing in it. Nonetheless, he made believe there was and pretended to drink from it anyway. I'm not sure of this, but I don't think many non-human animals have that mental ability. Regardless, I think it marks a new mental talent.
