April 2, 2003 - Wednesday
It's been a week and a half since Harry's milestone decision to wear underwear
and virtually as long since he's had any kind of accident. That success is
clearly why the current thinking on potty training is to wait until the child
is a willing participant. Sure, even then, children are likely to have accidents,
but they are generally fewer. When I was picking up Harry from preschool today
his teacher was explaining to the parent of one of the younger children -
a not quite 3-year-old who moved up to preschool from the toddler room in
January - of the accidents he'd had that day; enough to have used up all his
on-hand underwear. Harry may yet have accidents, but he's clearly an active
participant in this effort and certainly with Harry's strong will, that's
the way it really had to be.
