December
22, 2004 - Wednesday
As wholesome as it may sound, the boys and I have been playing Christmas carols
together like this for much of December. Actually, I've been playing guitar
and singing Christmas carols almost nightly since early December and the boys
have increasingly participated, first singing a little, then playing
drums. Then, having heard of Harry's budding interest in drumming, Gramma
Judy found a percussion set for Harry's birthday containing these bells and
triangle and many other noisemaking instruments and we've had a regular family
band every night since. OK, just so it's not sickeningly sweet, I am in the
habit of fooling around with the meter; for example, playing Silent Night
in triple rather than duple, Joy to the World slower and with swing eighths,
etc. The boys particularly like Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Frosty the
Snowman (they knew the song from last year before they saw the show this year),
Rudolph, Up on the Housetop (which they sing at school), and, of course, Jiggle
Bells.
