April 28, 2005 - Thursday
The drums have finally arrived! They came this morning while the boys were at school and, awkwardly, we didn't have time to finish building them before rushing off to their drum and cello lessons, nor was there time before bed after was got hom this evening. I finishied putting most of the drum heads on the drums after Harry had gone to bed, they seemed a bit involved for a five-year-old, but I left one for him to help with hin the morning. Just as with buying it, I really wanted him to be an active participant building the set, so I didn't put any of the set together this evening. The drum pads, the silencers that will make the sound much quieter, actually arrived yesterday and I told Harry I expected the rest to come today, so it was a little surprising that he was very anxious to come home from school today, especially when I made such a big deal about him wanting to leave quickly. I think he was just in a contrary mood, because he kept asking "why," "why do we have to go right away..." I suppose I should have just told him that his drums arrived, but it's a quick ride home and I wanted him to see the box for himself and see the assembly n we got home. Still, he insisted on picking flowers outside before coming in, almost purposefully trying to avoid it. Jeremy even quessed what was going on first and got excited. Of course, when Harry actually stopped being ornery and came in to see the box, he started hopping wildly about the kitchen, before getting down to business opening boxes and pulling out the pieces. He was deligent about helping build for the few minutes we had and in lieu of stories at bedtime. And, we brought the snare drum to his lesson to show his teacher, Abe, and for me to get a little professional advice on building and tuning.
