August 16, 2005 - Tuesday
The boys' mother left yesterday morning for a week-long business trip and won't be home until Saturday afternoon. So, I've got the boys. That's not really a big deal since I spend a couple hours in the afternoon with them anyway. It just means that I make dinner and put them to bed instead of doing a little more work. But today it also meant that I needed to take them with me to the old house to fix a minor plumbing problem with the kitchen sink in one of the apartments.
I have to concede that since Harry was born I've thought about this sort of outing to fix something at the old house eventually turning into a potential father-son bonding experience and it's one of the reasons I think it may be worth the hassle of being a landlord. Of course, I wouldn't have really expected that sort of bonding experience to happen until the Harry and Jeremy were a little bit older and with a little more focus and longer attention span. Thankfully, today's job was reasonably fast and I actually had Harry's interest for much of it, although with the two of them together their minds soon fell into a familiar role playing with the idle tools. I guess at least they stayed with me in the kitchen. Harry even helped a little by holding and handing me tools and holding a wire in place while I tightened it. It all worked out pretty well, but I wouldn't want to try it with any job that is too much more complicated, at least not for a couple more years.
After that we went out for dinner and a subway ride. I guess one of the biggest successes of the day was that I didn't have to dangle that in front of them to keep behavior in check and only brought it up when we were back in the car.
