An interesting offshoot of this whole Bioniacle-buying, Bioniacle-envy thing has been that it's given me an opportunity to talk with Harry about money, to explain the idea of buying things with money and that we have to save enough money to buy things that are expensive. He gets some of it, but the amount thing is a little tough so far.

Harry's mother has a couple of coin boxes on her bedroom dress. One is full of foreign coins, mostly now -obsolute European and Soviet coins and the other has $1.32 of domestic coinage. The boys have often played with foreign money in the past, but this morning while I was still in bed, Harry came in and grabbed the other, by choice or coincidence I don't know. So, I told him about pennies, nickles, dimes, and quarters and their relative and we counted they all to see how much they were worth all together and compared that to the cost of the different Bionicles. From there we somehow got into talking about keeping money in a piggy bank and remembered that Harry already had piggy bank and before I really knew it Harry was essentially commandeering the $1.32 for his own piggy bank. He didn't ask, but I could see that he was a little tentative about it and told him that if he wanted to save those coins and start his piggy bank then he could keep them.

Not surprisingly, because the coins were now on his mind, he did not leave them in the bank and instead played with them this afternoon. Very sportingly he share them with Jeremy giving him the quarters and dimes. Unfortunately, I'm fairly sure he didn't remember that they were the most valuable ones.

On the other hand, Harry was refreshing noble later on. His mother tells me that he came out and told her that he had taken the money from her dresser coin box. He did not tell her that I told him that I was sure she wouldn't mind if he was going to learn about saving money in his piggy bank.
