I switch channels a lot on the car radio in order to keep the songs coming and the boys entertained. On the way home from school this afternoon I happened to land on a station that plays songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s (it may be just the 60s and 70s, but it doesn't really matter). The station's little promo came on saying that they were playing "the songs you grew up with."
Harry heard it and said, "he said they only play the songs you grew up with. Why do they only play the songs you grew up with. You should learn new songs."
I find that a remarkable comment, and on many different levels. Primarily I take that as in the context of Harry getting my message about learning new things and the importance of learning with self-consciousness. I suppose it's possible that Harry meant "you" there to mean "me," suggesting that I need to learn new songs and get off these songs "I" grew up with, although that would imply that Harry understand that these were indeed the songs I grew up with and I don't think that's the case yet. I suppose it might be that he just want's the radio to play other songs, but I very often take requests from the boys, so if he wanted a different song I would think he would have asked. Besides, it wasn't a song he was commenting on, but rather the promo.
I explained about demographics a little, but that's a pretty tough topic for a five-year-old's view of the world.
