Harry actually used the term "girlfriend" today about Hadley. Interestingly, the words were there, "Hadley is my girlfriend," but the tone suggested that either Harry wasn't quite sure about what he was saying or how I would react to what he was saying. It came out sounding like he was trying out the phrase, looking for some kind of hint as to what the mysterious tension around the word really was all about. After all, Hadley's a girl and she's his friend. What's the big deal? I smiled and said "yeah, that's right. She's nice, isn't she."
A few days ago Harry also said that he was going to marry Hadley. That may sound similarly youthful, but marriage is a concept that Harry has bantered around, but with less appropriateness. He's listed Rip, Joe, and his guinea pig "Spooky" as the objects of that marital aspirations and we've kind of suggested that marriage is a little different than just being friends or likely someone or something. Interestingly, during those discussions I've found myself dancing around the idea that gay people can and do marry in some places. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I tend to not believe it will be right for Harry (only time will tell about this, but there's little indication that Harry would tilt in that direction). I've avoided saying he can't marry Rip or Joe, although I did explain that Spooky was out of the equation, just that it probably wouldn't work out that way and that marriage was a little bit different. Anyway, the point with a new focus on "marrying" Hadley takes any side issues that might confuse things out of the picture. Is that what the gay marriage opposition is all about, not allowing those misleading expectations to creep into the picture?
