July 19, 2006 - Wednesday
Ricketts Glen has a nice quiet lake that kind of arcs around the area where
the campsites are and many visitors use it for fishing and boating, listening to the frogs croaking in
the evening, and bird watching. And down at the far end of the
lake there's a sandy beach area with a cordoned off area for swimming. Since
it gets dark so late in the evening in July we took the boys swimming after dinner last night and
then again before we left this morning. On the one hand, it was just something
to do in lieu of the boys' bedtime bath and a way to enjoy the park for the
short time we were there. But it also seems critical to me that we get Jeremy
back into the water as much as possible following his swimming
pool trauma of last week.
Last night started off very badly in that regard, although perhaps expectedly so. Harry was great, swimming out to where he could barely touch bottom and regularly going under the water. Jeremy, however, was panicked about "the deep" well he was still only up to his ankles. But before we got out, although not without much resistance, we'd got him out into the water having fun being pulled along. By the end of our swim this morning he was only holding on by one hand. He's still nervous, but he's coming back.
