We have something of a
dilemma now that we're trying to get on a normal schedule again and it involves
our commute. Harry rides with us as we go into the city and generally tends
to fall asleep when he's in the car. Ordinarily, there'd be no problem with
that, but for now there is and it is twofold. First, and most important, we
need to get Harry sleeping through the night again on a regular basis. He's
done it a couple times recently, but not at all consistently as he used to
do. We're worried the the extra sleep during the day in the car keeps him
up during the night. Second, Harry's naps during the work day are special
times when both his mother (in the afternoons) and I (in the mornings) can
get a lot of work done. If we jeopardize his sleep patterns with these untimely
commuting naps, those precious times may be forgone by our boy.
On the other hand, I hate to have Harry develop a habit of staying awake during
long drives the rest of the time. It's so nice to have him relaxed in the
car for other trips. Ultimately, I'm starting to believe we're fooling ourselves
if we think we're going to fight the impending sleep. We've tried already
with only marginal results - both keeping him awake in the car and, when we
do, having it affect his sleep patterns at night.
