7, 2000 - Friday
Harry slept for more than 7 hours straight last night. That's a record for him,
though 6-hour nights have been fairly common over the last week. Naturally,
Harry's mother and I couldn't capitalize on his generosity. I woke after 5 hours
having heard him gurgling, but found him quite asleep. His mother and I both
woke up after a little more than 6.5 hours, again thinking we had heard him
grumble, but found nothing except a calmly sleeping Harry in the bassinet. We
then lay there moving in and out of sleep for the next half an hour or so wondering
if we should wake him up. Of course, that sounds like a ridiculous notion, and
it probably is and should be blamed on our half-waking state, but the idea was
planted by Harry's doctor. When we took Harry for his
first check-up, she told us some babies sleep too much. Unfortunately, though
I have assumed she was referring to babies who sleep darn near all night and
all day, she didn't really explain the quip and that instilled his mother and
me with a twinge of new-parent self-doubt.
Fortunately, saner ideas prevailed and we did not awaken Harry. In fact, we
sure hope he does it again tonight. I'm
open to contrary opinions about whether 7 hours sleep is too long for a
3 week old baby for any other reason than our cosmic need to suffer more as
first-time parents.
In other news, we received Harry's Social Security Card today. He has been officially
recognized by The State. He can be taxed. More immediately relevant, however,
he can be recognized as a tax deduction for his mother and me. Drinks are on
us next April 15!
