I know my aging brain is no match for Harry's when it comes to learning new
tricks, but I'm still trying. Since I've had no experience with infants prior
to Harry, I've found it quite valuable to see how other more experienced baby
handlers work. For example, I learned quite a bit just by watching
the nurses at the hospital after Harry was born.
A couple weeks ago, Harry had a visit from his great aunt and uncle and I picked
up another valuable tip. I didn't really recognize it at the time, but I've
use it many times since with success. During the visit, Harry started squirming,
as he does from time to time. But since he hadn't been nursing immediately beforehand,
his mother and I just thought he was bored. But with three children and four
grand-children, Harry's aunt picked him up right away saying "that looks
like a stuck burp." And, sure enough, before too long she had extracted
from Harry a fine example of infant gastro relieve.
It didn't take too many more times of Harry randomly spitting up long after
feedings for me to link the episodes and to realize that little plumbing often
needs some assistance. I don't know, maybe I overdo it now with burping as the
default discomfort after hunger and messy diaper, but Harry doesn't usually
mind the process and it often works. And, it makes me feel useful.
