If you're thinking
that Harry is far too young to be able to drink from a cup, as shown on the
left, you're absolutely right. Were there actual liquid in that cup, I'm confident
that very little of it would make it in Harry's mouth, let alone down his
throat. No, Harry likes the blue cup for another reason: it does everything
a toy should do for a boy of his age. He can put it in his mouth and gum it,
but he can also bang it around so it makes lots of noise. He likes that. Best
of all, he can use the cup and the noise to ward off evil intruders, or at
least as a way of saying "don't mess with me, I've got my cup, I'm in
control." He certainly seems to have fun with the cup.
He's been getting this look, sticking out his lower lip and chin, often lately
as he waves various toys and objects things about. Somehow it makes him appear
very empowered, or as least as much as an infant can. The question is whether
this is a male thing and he's trying to look tough? I suspect many little
girls bang stuff around too, but I can also see this as early stages of stereotypical
masculine behavior.
