March 9, 2000 - Thursday
Harry is in Mexico! He is El Nino.

My business junket started today and this morning Harry's mother, Harry, and I all boarded a plane for Cancun. Of course, it's Harry's first international travel and what a way to start! We'll be spending four days and nights at the Ritz-Carlton Cancun where any request is apparently their command and "it's my pleasure to serve you, sir" is the most commonly heard phrase.

As with his flight to Grandpa's, Harry was a champ most of the way here. We did not, however, have a direct flight and that meant twice the potential trouble. As before, Harry seemed to have no problems with his ears and, in fact, slept through both descents. But the second leg of the trip brought him close to his limit for being cooped up on his mother's lap. He whimpered and whined enough to let his mother and I know he was not happy, but he thankfully never reached the point of annoying his fellow passengers - at least that's what we're prepared to believe without evidence to the contrary. Of course, it could have been that he was just tired because he eventually fell asleep for the duration of the flight.

Harry's mother and I had our first of four business functions for the trip this evening and the first need for an unfamiliar baby-sitter for Harry. I went about an hour before Harry's mother for the hard-core business part of the evening. She followed after a gracious, young Mexican woman named Karla arrived to look after Harry. It was just a couple hours and we were just downstairs in the hotel so it was a fairly low stress beginning for leaving Harry in other hands. Sure enough, there was no trouble. In fact, Karla says Harry was a perfect baby, only whimpering enough to encourage a bottle his mother had prepared beforehand.

While at dinner, we learned Harry was not alone in his relative age group amongst our fellow travelers. 14-month old Elise was in attendance and at the event with her parents. All four of us were mildly relieved to learn we were not alone with a young one.
