December 9, 2001 - Sunday
Harry and his mother went to the store this morning. It seemed like a good
idea to get Harry out of the house again after playing for more than an hour
outside in the first snow of the season.
The storm last night left a good six inches and Harry certainly enjoyed being
out in the new snow, playing and building a snowman (well, dad built a snowman,
but Harry liked it). But, it meant that going back inside into the relative
confines of the living room when he was starting to get a little cold was
a recipe for discontent. Going to the store was a regular weekend outing for
Harry and his mother before Jeremy was born so it seemed like a good idea.
And, since Harry and his mother hadn't been to the store without Jeremy in
more than a month, Jeremy stayed at home with me. It took a little less than
an hour for them to return and that's easily the longest I've had alone with
Jeremy thus far. But, much different than my
first time alone with Harry, which admittedly happened at just 10 days
as compared to 5 weeks, was a truly relaxing experience for both of us. We
read four different books, twice through each, I played a couple songs on
my guitar, and we made faces and "goos" at each other. Jeremy never
made a discouraging sound the entire time. I can't help wondering whether
Jeremy seems noisier than Harry in large part because we were able to spend
so much more time interacting with Harry. Maybe Jeremy needs to fight for
it a little more.
