"Mommy, why does Santa not want anyone to see him?" ask Harry this
evening at dinner.
"That's a very good question," she answered after a moment's hesitation
and a glance across the table at me that was half isn't-our-boy-so-clever
and half what-the-heck-do-I-say?. After all, why would Santa, a reputedly
jolly old fellow who seems so gregarious in all depictions, not want to be
social on Christmas?
"I think it's because he has so much work to do getting ready for Christmas."
That's the direction we went in and it seemed to work. Somehow we quickly
got into magic and all the mystery that surrounds Christmas and Santa and
that seemed to get past the initial inquiry. Plus, it seems to me that explanations
in this matter don't have to be all that good because even an inquisitive
kid like Harry really wants to believe.
After dinner the boys watched Frosty the Snowman. I told them about it on
Monday and every morning on the way to school Harry asked if this was the
night Frosty was on. He'd heard me sing the song a few times (this year he
clearly remembered it from last year, but I think the thing that made watching
Frosty so exciting was that when I told him it was on I told him that he'd
have to stay up late to watch it.
