Harry had a play date today with his friend from school, Aidan, and everything
seemed to go just about as expected, except for Jeremy. He was clearly jealous
that his brother was doing something he didn't get to do. It doesn't matter
that Jeremy hardly has a chance to interact with Aidan at school, given that
Aidan usually leaves before the Preschool and Pre-K classes unite for afternoon
playtime. This was all about Jeremy feeling like he was missing out on something,
at least I think so. Interestingly, Harry left for Aidan's house with Aidan's
mother about an hour before I usually pick up the boys and that left Jeremy
at school without his brother for a while. I'm told that made him "a
little sad," with the implication that he was somehow surprised and disoriented.
But I think Jeremy knew exactly what was going on. We had talked about
Harry going to Aidan's over the last few days because the original play date had to
be postponed from this past Wednesday. Fortunately and very charmingly, one
of Harry's other friends helped the teacher make Jeremy laugh shortly after
Harry left and after that everything was fine. That other friend, Connor has
always seemed very gentle, even doting, with Jeremy. Interestingly, Jeremy actually once
said he didn't like Connor, but I'm pretty sure that's because Connor tends
to get into Jeremy's personal space while doing that doting. I asked the teacher
a couple of weeks ago about it and she confirmed that Connor is always very
nice to Jeremy. Connor, said the teacher, is the youngest in his family and
may be fascinated by the idea of a younger brother. Or perhaps just wants
to try behavior he's received from an older sibling on someone else. Either way, Connor has been very nice.
