I have to that I started this a couple of weeks ago consciously and on purpose.
It's a little goofy, I know, but I did it anyway. In his
Bionicle movie, the characters -- lego characters with no discernable
hands -- effectively shake hands with each other by touching their fists together.
Imagine a day when Harry will no longer let me kiss him on the cheek, I asked
Harry if we should do that, too. He said we sure, so for the last couple of
weeks as I leave him at school, after I kiss him on the cheek, I hold my fist
out. He doesn't always notice right away and sometimes I'll have to say "hey"
or something, but then he'll raise his little fist and touch it to mine. I've
continued to do this because if he's started to play with one of his friends,
which usually does happens immediately when he gets there, he'll always turn
a self-conscious eye toward the other kid, give a giggy little chuckle, and
smile back at me as if we're doing something special. At least I think that's
what he's thinking. And, for the first time to today, Harry was the one who
said "dad?" first and put up his little fist for our Bionicle shake.
