Jeremy's first trip to the dentist today went about as well as possible and
it certainly didn't hurt that Harry was there for an appointment, too. Nor
did it hurt that Harry seemed to be quite overtly taking the role of big brother,
showing Jeremy how things worked there and what to do. Harry introduced Jeremy
to all the toys in the waiting room, then explained about picking toothpaste
and floss once they got inside, and happily took the chair (and sunglasses)
first, saying, or at least implying with his body language, all the while
how cool everything was at the dentist's. With all that role model, Jeremy
really had no choice but to just do it. Although, I have to admit there was
a subtle difference in Jeremy's demeanor compared to Harry's on
his first visit and it's very much a glimpse at their two personalities.
They were both a bit tentative, of course, and out of their comfort zones
in a strange place. And both boys dutifully did as they were asked, neither
complaining or hesitating. Yet while Jeremy appeared to just apprehensively
sit there trying to take everything in, I remember Harry apprehensively sitting
there looking around out of the corner of his eyes, figuring, calculating,
and even giving the hygienist to little bit of "I'm watching you."
