I took the boys canoeing on the Squannacook this afternoon and saw a beaver.
This is a small winding river that the boys mother and I found on our free
day last Sunday and a great river for discovery, but the beaver was an
unexpected surprise. I was actually maneuvering the canoe it a little cove
when we heard a slap in the water some 40 yards upstream. We eventually got
within 25-30 of the beaver (that's about as close as I think would be appropriate
for several reasons) before he disappeared under the water and headed two
somewhere else, but that was not before we'd gotten a good look at him swimming
and slapping his tail, although we mostly heard the slapping because he'd
try to surprise us to make us go away. What great entertainment for two young
boys!
