September 2, 2004 - Thursday
Today was visiting day for incoming students at Jeremy's future (and Harry's
current) preschool. We'd done this with Harry this spring, but in the middle
of the school year and Harry was the only one child visiting at the time.
With that in mind, and without thinking much more about it, I went kind of
expecting Harry and Jeremy to play together for much of the hour long visit.
Had I given the start of the regular school year any thought, however, I would
have not been surprised by the room full of toddlers and parents, many having
never experienced a daycare setting. Harry's class was whisked outside right
away after he got there and that left Jeremy and me inside with the entire
class of mostly nervous incoming 3-year-olds and their, often equally nervous,
parents. Ultimately, that made Jeremy one of the most relaxed kids in his
future class. While many other kids were experiencing their first separation
anxiety, Jeremy was happily marching upstairs to a place he'd come to know
from dropping off and picking up Harry. And, while the school directors where
explaining to the group of assembled parents that the cries of their children
were perfectly normal and would (and did) soon fade from the room upstairs,
I was thinking that I've been there many times with Harry when he was younger
and we were newer parents. I was also thinking what a well-adjusted second
child Jeremy is and how any fears about the trauma of him breaking from his
normal routine with Mary are completely unfounded.
Since today was also mommy's birthday, I took the boys shopping for a present.
My original idea was to have them, either separately or together, get a brooch
to go with a jacket I'd gotten for her. However, Harry first started finding
earrings he liked. Of course, there were many large and loopy ones, but Harry
seemed to understand my explanation that they probably were the wrong style
for his mother and he ended up with some surprisingly pleasant golden shells.
Jeremy's yellow tupils are more of a novelty, but not as much as the pink
balloon brooch we eventually found.
(September 4 - Interestingly, when mommy wore those golden shell earrings
today, Jeremy seemed to believe that he picked them out even though they were
Harry choice. Jeremy was right there when we found them and paid for them
and I guess that was enough.)
