This morning at breakfast Harry quite strangely started crying because there was no more of the Granola with raisin cereal he's been eating for whole last week or so. Harry usually switches between a few different cereals over the course of a week, but I'd noted lately that he seemed particularly taken with this one. Still, it seemed, that wasn't a really a reason to cry, especially for Harry who's usually more stoic about things.
What's going on here, I wondered to myself while trying to defuse the situation. We did, for the first time, have another Granola, the kind without the raisins, but that didn't appease Harry. I opened another cabinet looking for a box of raisins.
Harry, not crying anymore but still outwardly angst-ridden, asked, "can you put raisins in this one?"
"That's exactly what I was thinking, Harry.
I'm looking for raisins right now." I found a couple little snack boxes.
"I want two boxes."
"Let's start with this many and see how it goes."
"The other cereal has two boxes."
"Maybe in the whole box, but I don't think you 'd have this many in one bowl."
By this
Harry seemed to have collected himself.
I sent Jeremy and Harry into the dining room with their spoons, but called Harry back. "Harry, why were you crying about the cereal this morning? Did it just catch you off guard or were you faking it?"
Amazingly, he said, "I was faking it," with a little grin.
I went on to tell him that it is very dangerous to play tricks like that, referencing that sort of overreactive stuff as a behavior that I've seen other kids use on several occasions. "It doesn't usually fool anyone and most people just get annoyed," I added. Still, I was really just amazed that he would try it and more amazed that he would then admit to it.
