May 29, 2005 - Sunday
I guess it was probably last fall, although perhaps longer ago, when I picked up two kids bikes for free at a yard sale. I was by myself at the time and just stopped - you can do things like that when you don't have kids with you! - at what must have been the very end of the sale and the two bikes were amid a cluster of stuff marked "free." I figured the boys would eventually need something to start with so I took them and stored them in the garage. Harry's mother tells me that he asked about them once soon after I got them, but just the once.
Recently, over just the last few days, Harry has started to talk about learning to ride "his bike" (he remembered is was there) and how it needed training wheels. Coincidentally, we saw these training wheels, and the ones on Jeremy's bike below left, at a yard sale yesterday. It wasn't clear at the time that they would fit and we figured we'd just get new ones, but when I drove by the same house later in the day they were out by the side of the road marked "free stuff." I figured I might as well see if they did fit. And this afternoon Harry asked for them and we tried them out.
That was at about 3:45 o'clock and all of these pictures were taken at about 4:00pm when he was just getting started. Although, had I needed them, I'd have had several more chanced to take Harry's picture with his new bike. He was out two more times again before dinner and once more after dinner. It was classic little kid stuff: the new bike, learning to ride. Jeremy tried briefly to ride his, but he's just not ready and reverted to the tricycle. Harry did great, learning to use the coaster brakes, and peddle both down the driveway and up.
