February 2, 2006 - Thursday
We had Harry's second parent-teacher conference and, since Harry was still out sick from school, his mother took the day off from work to attend. The conference was all very pleasant. Harry seems to be doing wonderfully well in kindergarten. We did get our questions about the report card answered: "Demonstrates concepts about print" has to do with the complex relationships between letters when writing; for example, when to use capitals and lower case, proper spacing between letters and words, and the relative sizes of letters. The two "S-" grades under "Follows directions" and "Attends Appropriately" have to do with Harry's attention being a little too easily distracted from what he should be doing because he wants to look around at what others kids are doing. That's particularly true, apparently, when someone else is using the computer and he's at a table close enough to see. I guess I've certainly see that behavior from Harry.

We were done with the conference before 1:00pm and decided to surprise Jeremy. He'd love it because we'd pick him up before naptime. Indeed, we've noticed over the last couple of weeks that Jeremy doesn't sleep nearly as well at night on those days he goes to school. And since he almost certainly does take naps then and not on the weekends or at Mary's on Monday, I had a little side conference with his teacher. They're required by law to have quiet time, but the upstairs at the Moppet School has three areas for napping. The loft is for kids that always sleep and that's where Jeremy has been. The area below the loft is for sometime-sleepers and the book room is for quiet reading. We agreed that Jeremy should at least move off the loft.
