November 23, 2006 - Thursday
It was a Thanksgiving almost like it was when I was a kid, with more than two dozen people, relatives and friends, all crowded around a series of makeshift tables. That's how it was almost every year when I was a kid, whether it was at our house, or cousins' house, or our grandparents' house. Uncle Tom, one of those cousins of mine, was just reminiscing about the same thing and so it was great that we could all have a Thanksgiving like that again with many of the same people.

Of course, it was a lot different, too. Instead of being at the kids table, I was the host. And while the boys' mother and I have hosted Thanksgiving before a few times, this is the first big one that Harry and Jeremy (Harry anyway) may actually remember. We didn't actually have a kids table, per se, but rather a kids end of the big table. The idea, that we've used reasonably successfully with Uncle Ben and Aunt Lisa before, is that the kids eat their feast with us (while we eat appetizers or a light starter course, today it was cheese and salad) and then we adults spread out a little for the rest of the meal. The kids rejoined us for dessert. I think that works because it gives the kids a little favor of the holiday meal without boring them unbearably. Unfortunately, as host I didn't really think to take any pictures, but it was crowded.
