October 21, 2006 - Saturday
Mommy was away for a business conference for the day today and so Harry went with Jeremy and me to Jeremy's cello lesson. I think Jeremy had another very good lesson (three in a row), although I heard only two or three minutes of it, half from outside the door. I've actually been making a point to leave Jeremy's lessons this semester on the grounds that I'm possibly more of a distraction than a help. I did the same last semester as an experiment, but Tim kept saying it didn't make any difference. Admittedly, there are times when I am probably helpful to Tim telling what Jeremy's been working on, moving the lesson a bit in a direction that might pique Jeremy's attention, or just helping Tim (not a parent) reel in a squirming 4-year-old. But a few weeks ago I was sitting quietly behind Jeremy and he seemed to be really concentrating, when I finally spoke Jeremy seemed a bit surprised I was still back there and subsequently lost focus. So, I look for reasons to leave the room.

Today that was easy: Harry was with us and the days of him sitting in on Jeremy's lessons are long over. He'd brought his color supplies as he usually does with mommy when I'm traveling and can't go to the cello lesson, but he didn't use them. Far more interestingly, there was a rehearsal going on for a school production of Sondheim's Into the Woods and Harry and I snuck into the balcony to hear a little. I didn't think it would last, but Harry didn't want to leave. Perhaps it was the story - a collection of Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Bean Stalk, Rapunzel, and the Baker and his Wife - but he stayed and watched until Jeremy's lesson was over. Then, he wanted to show Jeremy and we all stayed and watched until the end, another 40 minutes!
