August 11, 2000 - Friday
All week Harry's done this (left). Every time went to the beach, and as we neared the beach, he'd get all excited and start windmilling his arms and hooting. All week I've been thinking about John Kennedy's speech when he said "it's only natural that men should go to the sea." Somehow even before Harry could see the water he seemed to know that's where we were going. Maybe it was the sea air, but even the discomfort of the cold water hasn't dampened his overall enthusiasm for the beach and the sand and all the people moving about the shoreline.

This backpack (right) is a baby shower gift from before Harry was born and he's finally big enough (barely) to use it. The straps at their tightest are still rather loose, but he's in there pretty good. And, he seems to like it quite a bit. As for me, it's a lot better on my back because it distributes the weight more evenly than the front carrier or just holding him in my arms. I've also noticed recently that with things like the backpack - his car seat, swing, and crib - Harry's starting to lift his arms to help get himself out. Very cute.
