A little while ago I realized that this might have been the summer for Harry
to start taking swimming lessons. Unfortunately, I realized it too late to
do anything about it. Still, I've been talking to Harry about swimming and
the need to learn to swim. At the beach two weeks ago I learned from Cyndi
that at this age the main thing, if not the only real thing, they general
try to teach young kids is simply getting them comfortable with putting their
faces in the water. I showed Harry that by sticking my face in one of the
ponds he and Jeremy built on the beach, but he wouldn't try it.
Tonight, so typical of Harry, he tried it on his own initiative in the bathtub.
He'd probably been thinking about it since the beach and finally found the
confidence to try it. Actually, what he did was simply to put his month under
the water and blow bubbles, but that was part of what I did with my face under
water. And, he did also try to put his eyes under water, but not with his
month under water, too. Still, these are steps in the right direction, both
in terms of eventually learning to swim and simply developing confidence.
