26, 2004 - Thursday
For the second time in two days, I took the boys to a canoe rental place.
Yesterday it was my idea. Today it was theirs. Canoeing is something that
I've talked with Harry about a few times over the last few weeks. I love canoeing
and have long had idle thoughts that we'd eventually buy a canoe and a few
weeks ago I noticed a couple of canoes for sale around town and more recently
started checking eBay. Until recently Harry has consistently worried about
tipping over (I think thanks in part to this odd song about the Titanic that
he learned at school!?), but thankfully the excitement of the Olympics and
seeing the rowing, kayaking, and canoeing, as well as other water sports like
swimming and water polo (thanks NBC's cable coverage for showing all these
unique sports and not harping on personal stories as was the Olympic coverage
during the 1990s), seems to have helped Harry turn the corner. Yesterday after
getting home from the mall with a solid half hour before mommy was due home
I asked about canoeing and they both said OK. They didn't like the vests at
first, but they did like the paddles. And, the kid at the rental place was
nice enough to let us go out for about 15 minutes with no obligation. Of course,
once out on the water, Harry and Jeremy loved it and it was their idea to
go again today. This time we were out for a full hour and they still weren't
ready to stop. We'll be buying that canoe sooner rather than later.
