July 17, 2004 - Saturday
Over the last week, Jeremy has been doing less and less well with the toilet. Actually, it's been longer than that since he's really been all that effective with the it - using it, but not doing at all well staying dry - and this week he has been increasingly refusing to even try to use the toilet, saying he "don't like it." So, I've been talking with him over that time about the need to at least try to use the toilet or go back to using diapers, something I know he didn't want to do. Thursday afternoon I even found some long elusive "firefighter" underpants (we settled for some Buzz Lightyear ones early in the week, but I tried one more store Thursday) that Jeremy promised would do get him using the toilet again. Unfortunately, it increasingly seems like Jeremy's mind is ahead of his body. Thursday night he was all proud and peed in the toilet, but had an accident less than a half hour later. And, the same thing happened yesterday morning before we even left for Mary's.

Unfortunately, going back to diapers seems like something we probably ought to do, at least for a little to take the pressure off. Of course, it's an awfully tenuous thing, this potty training, and we don't want Jeremy to feel discouraged. But, the pull-ups have clearly become just diapers for him now and he's just not getting it these days and that's no good. I asked Mary about switching back to diapers yesterday morning and she seemed a little apprehensive about it, similarly worrying about making him feel bad. And, I take Mary's opinions very seriously given her vast experience and obvious success with kids. Then, yesterday afternoon, she acknowledged that Jeremy had just about refused to use the toilet all day and that she started talking to him about going back to diapers. She apparently didn't have any diapers left at her house, but agreed that maybe that's something we had to do. Naturally, it did not go over at all well with Jeremy this morning, but he's back in diapers today.
