More about memory:
A couple of weeks ago at lunch, the St.
Patrick's Day parade that we saw last year came up. I asked Harry if he
remembered it and he said he did. How well he remembered it was hard to tell.
Perhaps he remembered some of the marching bands we had walked past before
the parade started, or the firetrucks or police cars, maybe the memories were
fleeting.
Then he asked, "and what did we have in the car?" referring to the
ride home.
"Do you mean the Fluffernutters?" asked his mother. She had made
a pretty big deal about the the sandwiches at the time.
"Yeah, Fluffernutter," he said with a little laugh.
On the other hand, I've asked Harry a few times if he remembers Christine
or going to Christine's (or "Keen," as Harry used to say) house
and he says he does not. Her house is not too far off our route to Harry's
new school and I've actually driven by it with him to see if he remembers
anything about it, or Kayla, Danny, or Christopher, or going
to the bus stop in the morning. He still says he does not. A lot has happened
since. It's half his life ago for a four-year-old, I guess, but it kind of
serves as a another parameter on what the memory of a child is.
