December 24, 2005 - Saturday
Amazingly, given my past history in these matters, the only last minute shopping I had to do this year was to take the boys out to get something for their mother. This particular procrastination was highly calculated because they, Harry especially, could never have kept a secret if they had chosen something sooner. Tonight, I had a specific spot in mind where I thought the boys would find some nice animal earrings and that's just how it worked out. The power of suggestion, combined with no real desire on their part to look around for anything else, worked just great (although left to their own choices the boys picked the most expensive ones!) and we were in and out of the mall with great efficiency.

But it was a great little adventure with the boys with grandpa along for the ride, and Jeremy made even better. From pretty much the time we left the car and the whole way we walked in and then out of the mall, Jeremy was singing Debbie Reynolds' "Chin Up" song from Charlotte's Web in the most adorable little boy voice. I didn't notice anybody hearing him, but he wasn't whispering and if they did I just can't imagine that hearing a little boy singing...

Chin up, chin up, everybody loves a happy face,
Wear it, share it, spread a little joy around the place
Twinkle, sparkle, let a little sunshine in
You'll be on the right side
Looking at the bright side
Up with your chinny chin chin

... the day before Christmas could do anything other than make someone smile.
