July 5, 2005 - Tuesday
For our family day in Washington, we thought we'd start at the Air & Space Museum, see the Capitol, go to the White House, and then the zoo. You can really go wrong with the Air & Space with all the big rockets and planes, although we'd figured the boys would understand only a few of the side rooms.
We kind of abandoned
going to the Capitol because it was just too far for the boys to walk and still have anything left for the rest of the day. Besides, they were more interested in chasing the pigeons like they did in New York.
We did get off the Metro near the White House and took the obligatory family picture. It's all we could have hoped for with a three and five year old. Harry did recognize it from his books, but there were more pigeons to chase.
The main stop of the day was the National Zoo. The Metro ride was fun. Harry really seems to like being in control of his fare card and running it through the turnstyle. But it's a long walk from there to the Zoo entrance and the boys were hot and tired. The $11 to rent a double stroller was a given if we were going to have any fun.
I actually had hoped to stop at some of the monuments on the Mall after the zoo, but it just wasn't going to happen on this hot day.
We went back to Greg and Jessica's for a nice dinner in Old Town Alexandria and an early night for the boys. We're off tomorrow and on our way to Pittsburgh.
